MODUS SENTIENDI AND USAGE OF TENSES AND VERBALS IN SENTENCES AND CLAUSES (ON CATEGORIZATION OF PERCEIVED EVENTS)

Author:  L.M. Kovalyova

Abstract
The constructions influenced by modus sentiendi are divided in two groups:
1. Complex objects with Infinitives, clauses with Indefinite Tense and sentences with Indefinite Tense denote events perceived as a whole.
2. Complex objects with Participle I, clauses with Continuous Tense and sentences with Continuous Tense denote events perceived only partially.
The opposition forms a functional – cognitive category of evidentiality in English.
