Abstract:
Evidentiality like other categories of modus is semantically a background part of the utterance, though this may be regarded as an intended device to mark its special role and importance in the process of communication. In this light the choice of syntactic structures and prosodically isolated elements employed as marks of evidentiality are not accidental – all of them possess features which render them adequate for the purpose.
