WORD ORDER IN THE ENGLISH SENTENCE

WORD ORDER IN THE ENGLISH SENTENCE

Author:  N.A. Kobrina

Abstract
Besides fixed word order which is the prevailing tendency in the English sentence processing there are cases of alternative framework which are also communicatively meaningful and which are preferable as they describe human thoughts better and therefore are important in sentence comprehension. Change of position of a word or word-group may serve the sake of rhematic accentuation or to mark its secondary status. It may predetermine continuation and its syntactic structure. It may denote reference to the previous sentence, etc.
