The article is devoted to investigation of different types of cleft sentences in English as complex structures the form and semantics of which are assigned to cognitive principles of their functioning. Cleft sentences as a means of foregrounding serve, on the one hand, to make communicatively important local information prominent. On the other hand, they serve to focus some global information. The article points to the correlation of specific syntactical and communicative structure of cleft sentences.
