COGNITIVE STRUCTURES UNDERLYING STYLE

Abstract
The paper presents the conception of discourse as a scenario-like cognitive structure underlying the process of text formation with reference to the communicative situation the text is formed in. Styles are viewed as particular scenario-like substructures within the framework of discourse. The following cognitive constraints shaping style are discussed: (1) the model of the author of the text, (2) the model of the addresseе, (3) functions and pragmatic aims of the text, (4) the vehicle(s) of conveying the message and (5) reference of the text information to reality.
