Abstract:
This paper refers to the role of metaphor in conceptualizing social reality and describes a peculi-ar semiotic phenomenon ('metaphorical gender') when 'male' and 'female' features are detached from things which have real gender distinctions and transferred onto other things on the basis of culture-specific ideas of masculinity and femininity. It also presents a hypothesis that gender metaphors can be coded in the grammatical systems of languages and determine the grammatical gender of nouns.
