Abstract
The article considers the processes of commercial names creation as a reflection of stages of adult cognitive development in a situation of natural bilinguism. It is concluded that the levels of cognitive reasoning are determined rather by socio-economic than by ethno-specific factors. Commercial names are viewed as a metalanguage, as they are the bearers of common cultural codes.

Keywords:  commercial name, cognitive development, bilinguism, metalanguage
