Abstract:
The article focuses on the category of the author's intentionality as realized in literary text via cognitive approach.
The category of the author's intentionality includes the author's intention to build a coherent text as well as to express his evaluation and interpretation of reality. Theory of cognition makes it possible to describe the content and expression of the text in terms of phenomenological and linguistic structures which represent the individual cognitive space of the author.
The individual cognitive space of the author reflects his perception and understanding of the world and is modeled by cognitive structures: phenomenological cognitive structures are an expression of the author's knowledge of the world; linguistic cognitive structures help the reader identify them in the denotational space of the text. Thus, the author's intention, his knowledge and personal values make up his individual cognitive space and are reflected in the phenomenological cognitive structures, which, in their turn, are based on the linguistic means found in the text.
The purpose of the research is to identify the language means representing the category of the author's intentionality. To find out and describe cognitive structures we resorted to the method of mod-eling applying it to the text of the fairytale "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll.
The practical value of the work lies in the fact that its results and illustrative examples can be used in the university course of philological text analysis in a cognitive aspect.
