AXIOLOGICAL PHENOMENOLOGY OF THE ENGLISH CONCEPT REVENGE: DISCOURSE OBJECTIFICATION MODI

Abstract: 
We consider the axiological constituent of the English concept REVENGE from the linguistic culturology views. The purpose of the research is to reveal the value status of the concept REVENGE on the base of the contemporary English retributive discourse. The interpretation analysis of the linguistic data allows determining the major discourse actualization modi of the concept REVENGE: emotive «I feel», volitive «I want», actional «I will do» and epistemic «I think / know». The research shows the REVENGE is considered to be something for the sake of which an individual is ready to sacrifice a lot in a critical situation and thus it proves the value status of the concept in the individual world view.

Due to the heterogeneous nature of the phenomenon it can be estimated through various axiological views: epistemic, hedonistic, deontic and pragmatic. Investigation of different estimations results in the conclusion that the concept REVENGE is not a value itself but it is evaluated via the absolute basic values such as justice, family and close people, human honor etc. Hierarchically it is an instrumental value that serves to defend absolute human values.

The linguistic research results of the concept REVENGE can contribute to revealing the reasons why human nature is anxious to use revenge as one of the main forms of response.
