Abstract
Background
. The article is devoted to the analysis of the English-language fine arts discourse with the main focus on metaphoric models represented with the help of adjectives. Its aim is to study the peculiarities of the English-language fine arts discourse and to identify the most frequent metaphoric models functioning within texts devoted to the subject of fine arts.

Materials and methods. The study is based on the methods of continuous sampling, metaphorical modeling along the lines of Lakoff's “source – target domains” theory, and the statistical method.

Results. The authors suggest that within a metaphor there is a metaphorical core and a metaphorical periphery defining them as language units that carry the basic and additional metaphorical meanings. Taking into account the results of their research, the authors point out 22 metaphoric models based on the association of the cognitive elements of the target domain and source domain.

Practical application. The study may be of value both for those who specialize in philology and fine arts. Moreover, its results can be used as a helpful source of information for university students planning to deal with languages or starting out on an academic career.

Conclusions. A metaphor is a powerful and unique way of expressing one’s ideas indirectly, through appealing to the recipient’s thoughts and feelings. It needs a more careful and detailed study within the English-language fine arts discourse.

Keywords:  fine arts discourse, adjective, cognitive metaphor, metaphorical core, metaphorical periphery
