FROM THE PHONO-SEMANTIC FIELD TO THE PROTOCONCEPTUAL SPACE OF LANGUAGE

Abstract: 
The process of semiogenesis is closely tied with the procedures of conceptualizing and categorizing reality; primary concepts (genetic centers of radial categories) originate in sound-iconic meanings situated in three domains: 1) buccal (oral) and 2) manual activities and 3) onomatopoeia.
Based on the principle of primary genetic sound-iconicity the given study examines Indo-European roots with initial d- and their derivatives with the purpose of reconstructing the protoconceptual systems generated by their nuclear (sound-iconic) meanings and the semantic fields that emerged from them. According to the working hypothesis, all these roots form a semantic (protoconceptual) system with nuclear centers represented by iconic meanings.
The combination of the cognitive and component analyses made it possible to reveal the nuclear content of the protoconceptual system exhibited by the hypersemes “Cut”, “Squeeze”, “Pull” and their development through 23 semantic microfields built by the d-roots’ derivatives in I.-E. languages.
