Abstract

Within the cognitive approach we view language as an integral part of a complicated system of human cognition responsible for processing and storing information. In appliance to studying a derivational system of the English language we can use this approach for developing a three-stage algorithm of choosing a suitable variant while translating derivatives from Russian. 
At the first stage we make comparison of dictionary definitions of a word using the component analysis. At the second stage the propositional analysis of a derivative makes it possible to determine the parameters that the derivative has inherited from the word it was derived from, as well as the ones it has acquired in the process of derivation. The analysis reveals the way in which components of the propositional structure of a derivative correlate with the propositional structure components of the sentence it is used in as well as the way the implicit meanings of the derivative motivation formula are realized in speech. 
Basing their observations on the data got at the third stage while translating a text students receive the task to choose an English equivalent for the Russian derivative, which shows implicit meanings of the derivative under study. 
The described algorithm helps students to reveal systemic regularities of their native language, which results in further correlation between cognitive foundation of the object under study and cognitive ability in students.
