INTERETHNIC COMMUNICATION ACCORDING TO THE COGNITIVE APPROACH

Abstract

The article is a further development of the author’s ideas about the nature and status of interethnic communication as an ontological phenomenon. It defines the interethnic communication as a result of long-term coexistence and the associated interaction of different cultures in one society. Being the phenomenon of multi-ethnic society, the interethnic communication has a number of distinctive features that are pronounced when comparing it with the cross-cultural communication. These features cover social, cultural, ethnic, as well as psychological, and gender aspects.
In this article the author aims to examine another aspect of interethnic communication, i.e. cognitive. From this point of view the interethnic communication is characterized by vibrant global cognitive characteristics that have distinct ethnic and cultural specificity.
Due to the need for continued cross-cultural comparisons and interethnic communication, descriptive and comparative methods were used. Applying the techniques of descriptive method – observation, compilation, interpretation and classification- the author reveals features of some cognitive processes in terms of interethnic communication. 
In particular, it shows its relation with cognitive and cultural phenomena such as the formation of the ethnic peace, background knowledge, ethnic awareness, communicative behavior. During the analysis of these phenomena the author finds a strong association of interethnic communication with cognitive processes.
The results of this study provide evidence of the ontological independence of interethnic communication and expand the scope of its research system. This study has a considerable scientific perspective and can be used in the further development of communication studies as a whole, and the theory of cross-cultural and interethnic communication in particular.
