AbstractThe article focuses on emotive lacunas revealed in comparative analysis of the emotive concepts JOY/ ROKHEL in the English and Avar languages. In modern linguistics the emphasis is laid upon studying language facts in close connection with culture and mentality of native speakers. The gaps in cross-cultural communication reflect idioethnicity of mentality, showing that some aspect of a thing or phenomenon is verbalized in one language while it is omitted in another. In our investigation we apply various methods, such as structural-semantic, contextual, analysis of dictionary definitions, comparative analysis, component analysis, conceptual analysis, method of semantic differentiation, methods of cognitive interpretation.

From the interlingual investigation of emotive concepts we might conclude that:

1)    the nominants of emotion can be classified by differential semes in their semantic structures;

2)    Avar words relative to the concept ROKHEL are investigated by their realization in language and speech of native speakers;

3)    differentiation of Avar nominants makes it possible to distinguish a core and a periphery of the concept JOY in Avar;

4)    classification of English and Avar nominants by semantic components reveals their similarities and differences in the given linguocultures;

5)lacunological comparison of emotives evinces nominative, generalizing and concretizing lacunas in Avar against the English lexemes and nominative lacuna in English against the background of Avar words. We propose the following means of eliminating the lacunas:

·       Eng. fruition – Avar # nominative (absence of the seme «realization of hopes»): compensation – rokhel;
·       Eng. delight – Avar # nominative-concretizing (seme «the degree of intensity»): compensationk’udiyab (kutakab) rokhel, pazil’i, hat’il’i;
·       Eng. pleasure – Avar # generalising: compensation – lazat, kep;
·       Avar hat’il’i – Eng. # nominative (absence of conceptualization as breadth): joy, delight.

Keywords:  lacuna, concept, emotion, idioethnicity of mentality, emotive world view
