Abstract:  The article is dedicated to the study of metaphor functioning in a work of fiction. The novel «Michael, Brother of Jerry» by Jack London is analyzed with the aim of bringing forth the frame system structuring the textual key metaphor DOG is MAN and outlining its specificity as compared to other works by J. London featuring dogs as protagonists. The study is conducted in the framework of lingual-cognitive approach to language.
We discover the three basic frames of the anthropomorphic key metaphor: the emotions frame, the mental activity frame and the social relations frame. A special emphasis is placed on the change in the relations between the subframes in the social relations frame in accordance with the author’s intention. The English text of the novel is compared to its Russian translation in terms of preserving the original frame structure.
We draw the conclusion by stating the universal basis for the textual key metaphor in both the original text and its translation, as well as its crucial role for cognitive construal of reality.

Keywords:  textual key metaphor, frame, subframe, metaphorical model, Jack London, translation
