Abstract:
The given article considers nouns with semantics of time in the English and Russian languages. We take the data from M. Bulgakov’s “Master and Margaret” and O. Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Grey”. In both the works quantity analyses of nouns denoting cyclic and linear time are conducted. The main methods of research are descriptive (while we take single examples) and typological (while comparing general and specific features of the given nouns).
The results of the research can be of some interest for those who study lingua-cultural aspects of different languages, as well as for those who study the semantics of “time” concept and temporal deixis in the mentioned languages.
The analysis shows that nouns with temporal meaning more often express cyclic time. It is also interesting to note that in both the books the nouns “day” and “hour” are frequently used, as well as the noun “year” is used in the meaning of cyclic time, while we encounter names of meals in the same function.
Keywords: nouns of semantics of time, linear time, cyclic time, temporal deixis
