COGNITIVE ANTITHESIS OF THE CONCEPTS BIG/GREAT – SMALL (CULTURAL AND IDEOLOGICAL MEANING)

Abstract:  The topic of this research is semantic and axiological opposition of the concepts БОЛЬШОЙ/ВЕЛИКИЙ – МАЛЫЙ, МАЛЕНЬКИЙ (BIG/GREAT – SMALL). The objects of linguistic analysis are lexical units (values) and their corresponding evaluations that verbalize the concepts in question.
The employed methods of study are: 1) the method of systemic fixation of the language representations in different discourses: secular and religious, 2) the method of lingua-cultural description of the concepts in various fields of human activity: social, ethical, aesthetic, etc.
The following conclusions were derived:
1)    cognitive antithesis of the concepts BIG/GREAT – SMALL is lexically and axiologically represented in different spheres of human activity (and different discourses): social, ethical, aesthetic, religious;
2)    the dominant value of the concept BIG/GREAT is generally positive. The dominant value of the concept SMALL is generally negative;
3)    cognitive antithesis of the studied concepts at the lexeme level became reduced during the past two centuries.
Observations made in the present study can be utilized in theoretical studies of lexical semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, in theoretical and practical analyses of sociolinguistic issues and of verbal reflection of social ideology, etc.
