TO THE PROBLEM OF PECULIARITIES OF LEXICAL COMBINATION OF ADJECTIVES WITH THE SEMANTICS BIG SIZE IN ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN

Abstract:  The article is devoted to the lexical combination of English and Russian adjectives denoting big size (big, large, great, большой, крупный). The purpose of this paper is revealing the peculiarities of their lexical combination, its similarities and differences. We based our research on the methods proposed by D.N. Shmelyov concerning the establishment of the frequency of words in the sources we used (authoritative English and Russian dictionaries and literary works of English, American and Russian writers). We also used the comparative analysis. 
As a result, we revealed varied and subtle distinctions between the synonyms within one language well noticeable due to the comparison of English and Russian adjectives. 
The results of the research can be applied in the field of teaching Russian and English as foreign languages and also in lexicography. In conclusion we recommend to take into consideration the opportunities of lexical combinations of concrete words to ensure the correctness of speech.
