Abstract:  The paper deals with the contexts of English language narrative discourse of the end of the 18C up to the beginning of the 21C, which can be referred to the author’s introspection. The analysis shows that the author can be present in literary texts in different forms. He / she may carry out a straight dialogue with the reader, play a role of an omniscient observer, comment on characters’ actions, etc. It is not always clear if the author really addresses the reader and really wants to share his views and opinions with him. Very often, the author’s inner monologue is addressed to himself / herself. It is an attempt to analyze some important questions and problems. These are cases of the author’s introspection. The paper offers the criteria that can help distinguish between the author’s dialogue with the reader and the author’s introspection. The main difference lies in the emotional factor of the statement. The dialogue with the reader is usually emotionally neutral because the author expresses his opinion concerning different facts of the fictional reality. In cases with the introspection the author’s statements are emotionally coloured with strong negative feelings. It is quite obvious that the reader might be offended if unpleasant words are addressed to him. In conclusion, the author’s metadiscourse plays a very important role in narrative texts and correct understanding of the author’s message helps to better decode the main idea of the whole text.

Keywords:  introspection, dialogue of the author with the reader, fictional reality, the intention of the author, the opinion of the author
