Abstract:  The subject matter of the article is the semantics of two-component compounds, the formation of which is determined by such cognitive processes as evaluative categorization and conceptual derivation. The aim of the article is to consider the evaluative potential of compounds, to determine cognitive models with the help of which the evaluative component in their semantics appears, to reveal what human’s information of evaluative nature they represent. The research is conducted with the help of the definition and the conceptual analysis, the method of cognitive modeling.
The authors find out that the evaluative component in the semantics of compounds can be formed with the help of metonymic cognitive models: PART – WHOLE: bossyboots; PART1 (WAY OF PERSON’S BEHAVIOUR IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS) – PART2 (HUMAN BEING): daredevil and others.
The formation of compound semantics nominating humans can also be due to metaphorical cognitive models: HUMAN BEING – ANIMAL: jailbird; HUMAN BEING – ARTEFACT: slowcoach; HUMAN BEING (engaged in professional activities) – HUMAN BEING (performing a physical action): ambulance-chaser and others.
As a result of person’s evaluative understanding of objects and phenomena of the world, compound words represent such aspects of information about humans as: appearance (longhair), traits of character (yellow-belly), style of behavior (high-flyer), mental capacities (halfwit), social status (warhorse), belonging to territorial and/or national group (snowbird), professional activity (rockhound).
The presumable results presuppose the development of theoretical and methodological basis of studying a compound as a means of representing and interpreting knowledge.

Keywords:  two-component compound words, evaluative categorization, conceptual derivation, metaphor, metonymy
