Abstract:  The article is devoted to the description of lexical and grammatical forms of expressing the Future Tense in modern English on the basis of modal verbs and modal words. The author comes to the conclusion that the semantics of the Future Tense expresses the subjective attitude of the speaker to the narrative content. It also demonstrates the speaker’s knowledge about the topic of narration and allows to make his own predictions concerning the probability of the future events.
Modal verbs are organically linked with the category of the Future Tense, as in most cases the action in future time cannot be considered as the fact of reality because of its hypothetical implementation. The author argues that the nature of the category of the Future Tense is based on the speaker’s assessment of the future situation and on the expression of his subjective opinion, as well as on the designation of his own position in relation to the described event or fact. Therefore, the modal dominant of expressing future is leading, as it forms the additional component of the verb meaning with whiсh the speaker wants to convince the reader for the best interpretation of the author’s ideas.
The author found out that the modal verbs embody the way the speaker comprehends a particular situation in the future, with the help of any modal verb. While building the speech, the speaker always has a certain cognitive position, the components of which are the amount of the author’s knowledge, his intentions, and other components of the communicative situation.
