CHARACTERISTICS OF TRANSLATING RUSSIAN SLANG WORDS INTO ARABIC

Abstract:  This article discusses Russian slang words and expressions in the aspect of translation into Arabic. The chosen material is the group of vocabulary of jargon and slang, penetrating into general use, making the so-called “common jargon”. The aim of this work is to reveal the characteristics of the slang units, the problems and difficulties that the translator can meet when dealing with this part of the vocabulary, and to determine the Arabic equivalents of Russian slang, especially because this vocabulary remains poorly studied in the aspect of translation into Arabic.

The author applied the functional-semiological approach when establishing the equivalence of units of the common slang. The results of this work can be of interest to linguists, specialists in the theory and practice of translation, as well as for specialists in intercultural communication.

The research demanded finding out equivalents of the Russian slang units in the corresponding stratum of the vocabulary in the Arabic language, the units being slangy in nature or containing some degree of impoliteness and availability for use and having almost the same effect or effects that the Russian words have. To solve the problem of translating common slang we suggest striving for an adequate interpretation of the words of the original. This can be achieved through such techniques as equivalent translation, compensation, transcription, descriptive translation and approximate translation.
