Abstract:  The subject matter of the research is the description of knowledge, represented in the cognitive models of the phytonymic comparisons. The theme of the work suggests the use of the reference method in obtaining the referential knowledge out of the cognitive model of the phytonymic comparisons. The article aims at obtaining the referential knowledge by the method of reference out of the cognitive models of comparisons.
Methodological principles – the cognitive and contrastive – allow highlighting a cognitive-contrastive aspect in studying the process of obtaining the referential knowledge out of the object under consideration and describing it in comparative terms. Research methods are the reference method, contrastive analysis, modeling method.
The results of the research: we have studied the cognitive model of comparison; identified different types of referential subjective knowledge, showing positively or negatively expressed orientation of an object in relation to the subject matter of comparison. We also defined the ethnoconnotative knowledge in the structure of phytonymic comparisons; it has been proved that phytonyms – the names of plants can be employed for expressing spiritual qualities, properties of a person. They can act as benchmarks for figurative comparison. We argue that the standards may be universal, but in different cultures the universal signs are inadequate.
Conclusion: comparisons are an object of study of different sciences (logic, language, cognitive linguistics). Modeling of comparisons allows getting the inferential knowledge embedded in the structure of the comparison. The cognitive model of phytonymic comparisons allows to obtain various knowledge (subjectiveand ethnoconnotative).

Keywords:  cognitive model, reference, eferential knowledge, ethnoconnotation, standard of comparison
