THE ROLE OF PERCEPTUAL AND SPATIAL FEATURES IN METAPHORICAL MAPPING OF THE INNER WORLD OF MAN

Abstract:  The article deals with the role of perceptual and spatial features within the semantics of English natural space objects as a means of metaphoric knowledge representation about the inner world of man.
The category ‘Natural Space Objects’ represents a certain format of knowledge about ontology of physical world as established in the English linguistic community. Perceptual, spatial and other features and their various configurations revealed within the direct meanings of natural space objects (extension, shape, size, movement, location, verticality, horizontality, etc.) are the evidence of special knowledge structures which reflect information about ecological, historico-cultural and social wide experience of the English. These features are proved to be the basis of metaphorical extension into an abstract field of emotions, mental states and feelings. It is a question of сognitive correlation of different conceptual fields: natural сode representing knowledge about physical world of nature and bodily code nominating the inner world of man.
The metaphorical conceptualization of the inner world of man, the source-domain of which is natural space objects, is represented in the form of cognitive models. Certain knowledge structures revealed in the process of indirect conceptualization and categorization of natural space objects can be embodied at both linguistic and conceptual levels. It helps to understand general cognitive principles and mechanisms participating in the dynamic processes of indirect categorization to the full extent. The formation of new concepts is revealed through cognitive process of conceptual derivation.
