TWO MODELS OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN MODERN MASS-MEDIA: THE LINGUISTIC VIEW

Abstract:  One of the most effective methods of linguistic diagnosis of social processes is framing of the key concepts of social and political life by mass media sources. In this work the authors apply a method of frame construction to the collocation “civil society” in modern Russian political discourse. Contexts of this collocation are compared in the blogosphere and Omsk regional news programmes.As a result the authors define slots of a frame, analyze their lexical content, and make conclusions on significant differences in civil society models, presented in specified types of texts.
Blogs and regional news represent images of modern civil society, which have points of semantic intersection but at the same time are significantly different. Regardless of genres or discursive characteristics, the analyzed mass media sources display the image of civil society in Russia as developing, being at the initial state of formation. This is expressed in filling in the slot STATE – a metaphor for development of animate and inanimate nature, lexical units with semantic immaturity, young age, and active change. Other units in the frame of the supertexts analyzed are filled in differently.
In this regard, the research may contribute to understanding the socio-political processes in the Russian society.
