Abstract:  In the article the authors describe the concept COLOUR as a model the basis of which is the hierarchy of conceptual characteristics represented by color names.
The concept COLOUR includes three levels: the superordinate (noun colour), subordinate (names of colour tones), basic. The basic level includes the following color names: black, white, red, blue, yellow, green, referring to the upper tier, and pink, brown, grey, orange, purple, referring to the lower tier. Five groups of color names that belong to the subordinate level are identified. They do not have clearly defined boundaries, as there are color names, representing conceptual spheres that include different characteristics. These words name color tones that shift from saturation to brightness, from brightness to color mixing.
The concept COLOUR model reveals semantic differences of colour names in modern English, acts as a structure of knowledge, on the basis of which the interpretation is carried out. The interpretation leads both to the creation of new color names and the conceptualization of existing color names.

Keywords:  English color terms, the concept COLOUR model, the hierarchy of conceptual characteristics, superordinate, subordinate, basic levels, interpretation
