Abstract:  The point at issue is the image of Russia and China based on the data from Russian, American, European and Chinese mass media, as well as the real images of Russia and China found out on the basis of the surveys undertaken in 2013-2014 among three age groups of ordinary Russians (150 people) living in the Amur Region, situated on the border, and the same number of Chinese people living in the provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang, Zhejiang and Fujian of the People’s Republic of China.
The analysis showed that Chinese mass media differ significantly from those of Europe, Japan or Korea in that Russia-China relationships are represented as exceptionally positive. Touching upon Russia’s international relations and her role in the world community, Chinese journalists try to form the objective image of Russia, keeping the relative equality of negative and positive features. Questioning and linguistic interviewing showed that the overall evaluation of the Chinese by their neighbours, the Russian population of the Amur Region in any age group, is evidently positive, friendly, respectful, with sympathy, which determines good neighbourhood and peaceful relations of Russian and Chinese population in the border-zone, based on the mutual help, common understanding, and ever growing development of economical and cultural links, as well as on the level of personal contacts.
The authors conclude that the negative evaluation of the image of Russia adopted by the social mentality of the Europeans depends mainly on the information channels of the Internet, TV and other media. However, the Chinese media agencies, as well as the people of different ages have their own opinion, as the research has shown.

Keywords:  Mass media, negative information, positive information, information war, the image of Russia, the image of China, friendship and cooperation
