PRINCIPLES OF TERMINOLOGICAL NETWORKS CONSTRUCTION: TYPES OF VERTICES AND ARCS

Abstract:  The article discusses the issues of terminological networks (a kind of semantic network) construction, as one of the productive and meaningful ways of arranging and standardizing terminological systems. The author describes and clarifies the existing approaches to building such models revealing the organization of naïve and academic knowledge; defines the key peculiarities and principles of terminological networks construction based on terms representing related concepts. The examples are drawn from the terminologies of nanotechnology, space research, military affairs, information technologies and some others. The author justified the necessity of differentiating the terminology network vertices in accordance with the defined categories of mental constructs (types of notions) that the terms represent. The author of the article suggests the idea of differentiating semantic relations (arcs) between vertices and determines their main types, revealing the character of systemacy between the adjacent terms of the first and second order. The features of the organization of terms are analyzed and the representation of different types of systemic relations in the underlying form of terms is exemplified.
