COGNITIVE MECHANISMS OF COMPRESSION OF EVALUATIVE MEANING IN LITERARY TEXT

Abstract:  The article discusses the cognitive mechanisms of compression of evaluative meaning in a literary text taking the example of evaluation of professional activity.
The authors describe various approaches to the study of linguistic compression in the Russian and foreign linguistics, and clarify its relationship to implication. Using the material of lexical and phraseological units of the novel “Aviator” by E. Vodolazkin the authors identify relevant evaluation categories, which are based on evaluation criteria related to the qualification of the worker, complexity and intensity of work, quality of work, zeal (responsibility) of the employee. They also determine types of compression of evaluative meaning concerning the activities of a number of professionals, analyze mechanisms of compression of meaning, among which metaphorical transformation of the conceptual content of the utterance is the main one.
A new evaluative meaning is created through the transformation of “the known”, i.e. transformation of everyday knowledge existing in the consciousness of the subject of evaluation, verbalized by the non-evaluative unit of language. The understanding of the mechanisms of compression of meaning in a literary text allows to perceive its contents adequately and to carry out a correct translation into other languages.
