DISCOURSEONTOLOGY, THE SUBJECT PRINCIPLE, PERSPECTIVATION: AN INTEGRATIVE AGENT-CENTERED SOCIOCOGNITIVE PERSPECTIVE ON TRANSLATING

Abstract:  Taking a socio-cognitive perspective, the author discusses some core methodological issues of the holistic scientific interpretation of the nature of translating. The latter is modelled as a specific interpretive (meaning- and sense-making and -fixing), evaluative (perspectival) and interactive (dialogical) discourse practice.
The author shows that the cognitive mechanism of perspectivation, interdiscoursivity and intertextuality as its sub-mechanisms and linguistic means of attention allocation integrate within a single act of translating, construed of as a discourse-event, the subjective (making sense of the text, mental simulations, translanguaging acts) and the social (intersubjective interaction as value-driven participatory sense-making) dimensions of that practice.
The author argues out that since academic discourse on translation constitutes an efficient means of constructing ontological actuality of translating practice (on both, social and individual scale), a holistic yet agent-oriented account of the cognitive-semiotic-ethnic-cultural-social nature of translating is required. Therefor the epistemological model TRANSLATING–DISCOURSE and critical discourse analysis seem to be quite efficient tools enabling a truly integrative approach while both modelling and enacting translating. A set of factors to be accounted for therein are defined, e.g. ethno-socio-culturally and affectively connoted schemes of making meaning and sense of the world encoded in the text.
