ON THE LINGUISTIC MEANS INFLUENCING THE PROCESS OF LITERARY TEXT UNDERSTANDING (on the example of the novel Librarian by M. Elizarov)

Abstract:  The aim of the research is to study the text elements that define the processes of understand-ing. The author tried to achieve the aim set by applying methods of the text interpretation, keywords identification, lexical-semantic relations description, and component and conceptual analysis.
Based on the novel Bibliotekar’[Librarian] by M. Elizarov, the article considers the means that influence the processes of text understanding: title, epigraph, keywords, text characters, different varieties of repetitions, allusions, expression techniques of the author’s point of view. The use of these means depends on the literary tradition, method, genre, author’s claims and intentions. Degree of these means’ obviousness for readers is determined by the level of their competence, by the manner and type of reading.
The paper outlines that the meaning expressed by the means is always subjective as it is determined by the combination of social, mental, and intellectual aspects of the reader’s personality. These means direct processes of the text perception but do not provide identical results of the reader’s cognitive activity. The process of text understanding arises from a variety of factors. The level of reader’s competence development and the degree of work complexity should be classed among the most significant factors. The results of the research can be used when creating cognitive theory of understanding, when interpreting other texts, and when describing the artistic originality of modern prose.
