Abstract:
The article focuses on interpretation of the story “Rain” by W.S. Maugham from the cognitive positions. The text is analyzed on the basis of situational models. It is underlined that we understand text only when we are aware of the situation in question. The cognitive information is taken from the text which is based on both linguistic and some other forms of social activities. The author of the article points out to the main topic situation – the relations between Davidson and Miss Thompson and describes the microstrategies: Davidson – Macphail, missionaries – islanders.
Having analyzed the story we might conclude that the cognitive analysis allows to explore the text at the level of understanding its deeper meaning and the concept of the whole work, of perceiving the text in intellectual and emotional aspects.
The cognitive interpretation of the story gives an opportunity to contact with the world of the author, with his knowledge and intellect.
