LEXICO-SEMANTIC SUBFIELD “PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE CRIMEA”: LINGUO-CULTURAL ASPECT (on the material of I.N. Knorring’s diaries and memoirs)

Abstract:  The article describes the lexico-semantic subfield “Physical geography of the Crimea” represented in the documentary and imaginative discourse of the diary by Irina Knorring who emigrated from Russia in 1920. The purpose of the article is to identify linguo-cultural interpretation of the concept CRIMEA in the diary entries that include poetical texts of one of the representatives of the Russian émigré art.

Within the cognitive-discursive paradigm there are distinguished representatives of the concept CRIMEA which actualize realia of the subjectively pragmatic space of the author’s view of the world and appear to be means of conceptualizing space and time in the poetess’s diary. Cognitive-semantic analysis of the linguistic material of the work “About what Salgir waters sing. A refugee’s diary. Poems about Russia” published in 2012 suggests that the conceptual model of the author’s final resting place before fleeing from the country is reconstructed in the signs Russia, distance, sea, blue, sun, fog, cold, flowers. Located in the core of the relevant lexico-semantic groups, these signs semiotize the value content of the author’s view of the world at a turning point for the poetess. The identified linguo-semiotic characteristics of the nuclear lexemes allow to interpret cultural meanings of the discourse on the basis of subjective experiencing the wreck of the last hopes and the exile with its homelessness, a sense of exclusion and inferiority, anxiety and tension, fear, and awareness of the impossibility to return to the “lost paradise”.

The obtained results enrich linguo-cultural studies of the insufficiently investigated concept CRIMEA with new data.
