THE ROLE OF VISUALIZATION IN THE PERCEPTION OF E. JANDL’S TEXTS

Abstract:  The paper is devoted to the analysis of different types of visualisations in E. Jandl’s “concrete poetry” and peculiarities of perceiving them by the recipient. Under “concrete poetry” the authors understand the poetry, which has the priority implements – a graphical and/or acoustic potential of language units, as well as poetry, that combines the expressive possibilities of graphics and acoustics. “Concrete poetry”, despite the fact that it is part of the experimental poetic discourse, has not found its full expression in literary criticism.

It is a noteworthy attempt that E. Jandl’s works reflected different effects of text visualization on the plane of the sheet, which allows to create for the recipient the full picture of the perceived image. Analysis of the structure of the works allows to conclude that E. Jandl uses planar, font and graphic variations that play a crucial role in the semantic load of the work. In many works there is a mixture of different visual effects that make E. Jandl’s poetry a unique experimental poetic space.

In addition to graphic effects the authors of the article provide an example of combined graphics and acoustic effects within a single work for making the integrated graphic-text acoustic.
