THE CONCEPT OF DISTINCTIVE FEATURE IN MOSCOW PHONOLOGICAL SCHOOL

Abstract:  The article is describing a phonological system of the modern Russian language. The scope of analysis is the problem of applying differential characteristics theory in the Moscow phonological school. The goal of this work is to prove that the phoneme attributes as well as the phoneme itself can be described using a positional approach.
The result of this work is a proof that the phonemic characteristic has a complex hierarchical structure. It differs from the characteristics of a language sound that involve acoustic-articulatory fea-tures. The phoneme attribute includes the following varieties of characteristics: differential, integral, accompanying, basic, etc. According to the Moscow phonological school, a phoneme is a variety of positionally alternating sounds. In this article the author offers the same approach to be applied towards differential characteristics. Thus a differential characteristic is a feature of a phonological unit that can be transformed from position to position without changing its functional content. The article contains specific examples of the Russian phonological system from the perspective of the suggested approach to differential attributes. Using positional alterations of Russian vocalism and consonantism the author analyzes the behavior of differential attributes in a significative strong position and the position of neu-tralization.
The author of the article comes to a conclusion that studying a positional structure of phoneme attributes may become part of the Moscow phonological school theory.
