Abstract:  In the article English two-component compound nouns are viewed as a result of interpretation of knowledge about a human. The authors show that two-component compound nouns are formed with the help of metaphorical cognitive models. They are HUMAN BEING - ANIMAL, HUMAN BEING - PLANT, HUMAN BEING – ARTIFACT, HUMAN BEING - HUMAN BEING, and other models. The authors identify conceptual characteristics, on the basis of which the metaphorical transfer is carried out. Such characteristics as ‘property’, ‘action’, ‘manner of action’, ‘function’, ‘behavior’ and others are among them. The article presents the determination of the lexical categories, which are replenished by two-component compound words: “character”, “behavior”, “intellectual capacity”, “professional status”, “social status”, “age status”, “socio-geographical status”, “body”, “appearance”. It is demonstrated that these words have an evaluative potential.
English two-component compound nouns characterize an individual positively or negatively. They represent information about an individual as a biological, psychological and social being.

Keywords:  two-component compound nouns, interpretation, evaluation categorization, metaphor, lexical category
