Abstract:  The subject matter of the investigation presented in this article is the probe of the processes of toponymic migration and toponymic homonymy. Under the term toponymic migration, we consider transference of the existing geographical names to another territory. Toponymic homonymy suggests the existence of identical place names for denoting different geographical objects. These two processes complement each other.
The material of the research is the place names of the USA (approximately 17 000 units), taken from various toponymic dictionaries and information systems. The processes under consideration are observed both among primary and among secondary place-name nominations (i.e. toponymic nicknames).
The aim of this work is to identify intra- and extra-linguistic cognitive prerequisites for the emergence and functioning of intercontinental and intracontinental names-migrants.
Lingvocognitive focus on toponyms allows us to consider their specificity in the conceptual perspective, and to pay attention to the mental processes of the occurrence of toponymic units in the language.
The results of the investigation show that the main preconditions for names-migrants are as follows: a limited number of toponymic elements, patriotism of the migrating population, imitation of famous, bright and harmonious names, similarity of geographical objects according to their natural conditions, geographical location and economic processes.

Keywords:  toponym, toponym-migrant, toponymic migration, toponymic homonymy, toponymic nickname.
