Abstract:  The article analyzes discourse of closing arguments as a process of constructing the “possible world” of communicants. This study attempts to describe expert-lay interaction in the courtroom, shows asymmetries in courtroom interaction and identifies ways of eliminating their negative impacts.
Each discourse can be regarded as a “possible world” with different similarities to the real one. Theory of possible worlds which is used to study court discourse in the present paper allows to present discourse practices as attempts to construct a discourse of concord. Formation of a discourse of concord is the process of involving the Other into the “possible world” of the Subject, the incorporation of “possible worlds”. The author concludes that the speaking subject uses different methods to achieve consensus with the addressee: transition from the term to the notion, empathy, appellation to objects of the World of Values.
Identification of other interaction tools employed for DC formation and analysis of lay-lay interaction during jury deliberations in order to identify discourse tools used for the most beneficial DC configurations can constitute a productive avenue for further research in this field.

Keywords:  discourse of concord, closing argument, possible world, expert, inclusive pronoun, empathy.
