Abstract:  The article focuses on the problem of relationship between reality, thought, language and culture.
The aim of the authors is to reveal synchronic and diachronic features of the concept FATE/FORTUNE as represented in several cultures and languages. Precedent phenomena are considered in the article as effective method for exposing the concept content.
The study is based on etymological data and on empirical evidence provided by prose and poetic texts that also include quotations from famous people. The paper explores cognitive and semantic basis of linguistic units which build the concept FATE/FORTUNE as well as cultural implementations of the idea of FATE/FORTUNE in various cultures. Among the factors that motivate the units semantically, the authors distinguish becoming, cutting, and writing. The study attests to the fact that the concept FATE/FORTUNE is gender marked throughout the history of the English language.
The authors argue that precedent quotes and precedent situations are the key representations of the concept FATE/FORTUNE in language and culture.

Keywords:  concept, conceptualization, precedent phenomenon, fate, fortune, perception invariant, sense.
