Abstract:  The purpose of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of loanwords in Japan, trends of using gairaigo and newly coined words in recent years. Some attention is paid to social conсern in Japanese society about extensive use of gairaigo.
This research derives from a cognitive linguistic view of loanwords as part of normal language diffusion.
Methodology: the cognitive and anthropocentric principles.
Methods of work: a conceptual analysis, identification and description of the types of cultural interference, comparative analysis.
Conclusions: Due to a significant influence of American culture on Japanese lifestyle over the last years, the volume of gairaigo in Japanese has increased. Since new words are introduced into Japanese, many native words have been replaced with the loanwords in several fields of daily life. Loanwords are often sophisticated, have specific meaning different from English. The borrowing of English loanwords occurs not only in the context of morphological, phonetic and semantic adaptation, but in terms of cross-cultural interference. With English words Japan borrows new cultural meanings that transform main concepts of Japanese culture.

Keywords:  conceptoshpere, Japanese language, loanwords (gairaigo), popular words.
