Abstract:  The article deals with the problem of knowledge representation in a literary text by means of derivation, that become an object of an author’s and a reader’s reflection.
The subject matter of the study is knowledge structures represented by derivational language means. The main goal of the study is to prove the important role of derivational means as an interpreting cognition factor in the formation and perception of conceptual space of a literary text, as well as in structuring the system of knowledge representation.
Theoretical and methodological basis of the research is comprised by works in the theory of communicative activity, the theory of interpretation, cognitive poetics (N.N. Boldyrev, A.V. Bondarko, V.I. Zaika, A.V. Kuznetsov, I.A. Tarasova etc.). Observations on the functioning of word-building means in the literary text allowed to go beyond the traditional view on word-formation system units. It is proved that word-building means are a mechanism for interpreting consciousness. In the course of their functioning they change properties, which leads to their semantic and expressive revaluation by readers.
In the theory of language and text consistent and systematic study of word-formation means’ functioning in a native speaker’s mind is missing. The present study provides such an opportunity, since it shows that word-building means in fiction become a way of modeling the literary reality, generated by the author’s consciousness.

Keywords:  derivational sense, knowledge conceptualization, knowledge categorization, knowledge representation,
