COGNITIVE DOMINANTS OF SPEECH INTERACTION

Abstract:  The authors argue that the results of human interaction in verbal communication highly depend upon the mutual conceptual adaptation of interlocutors’ knowledge systems underlying communication and, in particular, on the mutual alignment of their dominant cognitive structures. These cognitive dominants are treated as main principles of the interaction organization. Among them are: thematic, subjective, sociocultural, instrumental, and intentional principles.

The thematic principle as a cognitive dominant of verbal interaction profiles concepts and categories that make the mutual conceptual adaptation successful. It is responsible for the choice of mental structures and their verbal representations to align with the theme of the conversation and to construe the right meanings, either conventional or spontaneously derived.

The subjective principle draws attention to the role of participants of verbal interaction ant their scope of knowledge associated with their gender, age, profession, types of activities, social status, place and standard of living. The conformity or disparity between interlocutors’ conceptual systems may also determine the success or failure of their interaction.

The sociocultural principle makes the interaction dependent upon the knowledge drawn from the social and cultural communities, the commonly adopted norms, patterns of behaviour, stereotypes, systems of values, speech patterns experience.

The instrumental principle coordinates verbal strategies with goals of communication.

The intentional principle makes the interlocutors’ intentions align with their verbal representations.
