THE DEVELOPMENT OF COGNITIVE-DISCOURSE WORLD-MODELLING THEORY IN EUROPEAN AND RUSSIAN LINGUISTICS

Abstract:  The article upholds the necessity of developing World-Modelling Theory, that analyzes discourse in terms of representational structures. It tackles the problem of selective representation of reality in discourse, influenced by the objectives of communication in the interests of symbolic elites, having access to controlling the information. The main purpose of the paper is to make an analytical review of cognitive theories, that address the problem of reality representation in discourse, in the context of contemporary European and Russian linguistics.

Methodologically, World-Modelling Theory draws on Text World Theory, introduced by Werth, Semino, Gavins, Sociocognitive approach to discourse, proposed by van Dijk, and is being expanded due to contemporary theoretical approaches of Russian scholars such as Boldyrev, Demyankov, Kubryakova. Adhering to the holistic approach, the author shows trajectories of modern European and Russian cognitive-discourse studies, and proves that World-Modelling Theory integrates the heuristics of both.

Analyzing a pre-election program of a candidate for Russian President 2018 within the framework of the developed theory, the author argues that it facilitates the comprehension of political ideology behind the linguistic expressions. The results might present interest for further investigating the socially-determined representational structures in discourse, that govern the perception of mass audience.
