KEY CONCEPTS, VERBALAZING THE IMAGE OF RUSSIA IN GERMAN MASS MEDIA OF 1990–2016

Abstract:  Concepts as SIZE, ECONOMY, CRISIS, AGGRESSION, and POLITICAL LEADER are the subject matter of our analysis. They interpret the image of Russia in Germany in 1990-2016. The language material is taken from the top-ranked newsweekly «Die Zeit».
The purpose of the study is to reveal the meaning basis of the key concepts, forming certain images and vision of the world among recipients. The research technique has a complex character. It includes the literature analysis, statistical, descriptive, interpretive and comparative methods. The authors also use continuous sampling method and corpus studies (corpus of the German language DWDS).
The analysis shows that even in the face of world partnership and cooperation with Germany, Russia has a negative image in German mass media: anemic economy, corruption, aggressive policy and potential danger. Germans and Russians have different attitude towards Russian government officials and leaders.
The analysis of the key concepts proves that the image of Russia is mostly stereotypical, but can have dynamic features: the warming in relations after German reunification, the escalation of tension by 2014, and the need of a dialogue and cooperation in 2016.
The multi-authored monograph is going to be the result of the research work. The monograph materials can be used for university training courses, such as “Cross-cultural communication” and “Cognitive linguistics”.
