COGNITIVE DISSONANCE AS A COMPONENT OF THE INTERPRETATIONAL PROGRAMME IN POSTMODERNIST FICTION

Abstract:  The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance viewed as an inherent characteristic of the interpretational programme the authors of postmodernist fiction devise for their readers.
Various mechanisms and strategies found in metafictional narratives entail “narrative discomfort and ontological doubt” when perceived by the addressees unprepared for numerous manifestations of intertextual irony, narrative fragmentation, contradictions, paradoxes playfully employed in postmodernist literary texts.
The first part of the article briefly outlines the relevance of cognitive dissonance as a motivational psychological phenomenon to interpreting postmodernist fiction. In the second part of the article the idea of treating postmodernist metafiction as texts characterized by explicit ludic modality is developed.
This approach might be quite effective when analyzing the ways of reducing cognitive dissonance triggered by the strategy of double coding, the use of the author’s mask and the mechanism of modelling an extensive topos of the extradiegetic addressee.

Keywords:  cognitive dissonance, interpretational programme, metafictional narrative,
explicit ludic modality, the strategy of double coding, irony.
