Abstract:  The article discusses peculiarities of linguistic realization of the metaphorical image ptiсa-troika (bird-troika) as a unit for decoding socio-political realities based on the Russian language media texts in 2010–2017 and associative experiment. The novelty lies in the characteristic of the metaphorical image of the ptiсa-troika regarding its semantic-pragmatic and transformational potential in newspaper texts. The material of the associative experiment reveals the specifics of forming the image of a ptiсa-troika in the linguistic consciousness of students of the Crimean universities.
The article emphasizes the fact of semantic changes which takes place not only on the denotative, but also on the connotative, pragmatic level, where the language unit acquires new semantic features. The analyzed material shows that most often the metaphorical image of the ptiсa-troika is used for imitating the attributes of modern reality, while their pragmatic, password-based, aesthetic, expressive, representative potential, as well as the possibilities of language play the role of an additional informality. Many of these functions are based on the estimation and inconsistency of the direct and portable meanings of the words that make up the mass media texts.
The analyzed metaphorical image reflects the rethinking by mass culture of political realities, authorities, standards, the formation of images of the past, present and future. This fact forms a figurative component of mass-media texts and pragmatic potential of newspaper articles, representing the political world through the national-specific language units.
The results of an associative experiment conducted with a student audience speak about the incomplete match of associations, caused by journalistic texts, with associations of the younger generation. The analysis of media texts and results of the experiment allows to conclude about wide semantic-pragmatic and associative potential of the considered language unit and essential prospects of researching media texts.

Keywords:  mass-media text, media communication, associative experiment, metaphor, connotation, bird-troika.
