NATIONAL-CULTURAL PERCULIARITIES OF JAPANESE FAMILY NAMES

Author:  N.N. Izotova

Affiliation:  Moscow State Institute of International Relations MGIMO

Abstract:  The article is devoted to the lingvocultural analysis of Japanese family names. The purpose of this paper is to examine the history of origin of the surname system, reveal family names characteristics from the viewpoint of genesis, structure, semantics and functions, describe the most frequent surnames.
The research methodology of the study is based on the typological approach, methods of cognitive interpretation and historical and cultural description.
As a result of the centuries process of formation, Japanese family names have acquired unique ideosemantics and connotations. This research carries out semantic and structure classification of surnames, reveals various groups, related to the landscape, nature elements, place of residence, profession, social status, religious beliefs, the direction and location of objects. Special attention is paid to most common, rare and unique family names.
The analyzed material demonstrates that more than 80 % of modern Japanese surnames come from toponyms. The greatest part include components of the semantic field “nature”, which is explained by the animistic worldviews of the ancient Japanese, the way of life connected with the cultivation of rice. The author has come to conclusions that the family names contain the national cultural component, reflect the national mentality and the perception of the surrounding world by the native speakers of the Japanese language. Mastering anthroponymic competence requires extralinguistic information concerning the life of society as a whole, its development and culture, which is extremely important for understanding the national psychology of the Japanese people, for successful implementating intercultural communication.

Keywords:  anthroponym, Japan, hieroglyph, toponym, semantics, component.
