Abstract:  In the article the authors identify Russian verbs that form the figurative meaning “speaking” considering conceptual derivation as a cognitive process that determines the formation of their semantics.
The authors describe metaphorical cognitive models that are used to form the figurative meaning “speaking” of the investigated verbs. They also determine the characteristics on the basis of which the concepts represented by verbs with the figurative meaning “speaking” are formed. The identified characteristics are ‘manner of action (abruptly/softly)’, ‘manner of action (monotonously/vividly)’, ‘manner of action (quickly/slowly)’, ‘manner of action (via the application of force)’, ‘manner of action (by putting something in, something out)’, ‘manner of action (by joining, disconnecting part of the object from the whole)’, ‘manner of action (abruptly)’, ‘manner of action (softly/ roughly)’, ‘manner of sounding (loudly/quietly)’, ‘manner of action (continuously/briefly)’, ‘property of sound’.
Verbs with the figurative meaning “speaking” actualize the characteristics of ‘manner of speaking (abruptly)’, ‘manner of speaking (quickly/slowly)’, ‘manner of speaking (gently/roughly)’, ‘manner of speaking (loudly/quietly)’, ‘manner of speaking (monotonously/vividly)’, ‘manner of speaking (continuously/briefly)’, ‘manner of speaking (remotely)’, ‘manner of speaking (with force)’, ‘manner of speaking (much)’, ‘relevance/irrelevance’, ‘informativity’, ‘logic’.
The interpretation of verbs with the figurative meaning “speaking” is carried out relative to the concept of “speaking”, including the characteristics of ‘speech activity’, ‘oral verbal communication’, ‘transmission of thoughts, information’, ‘nature of the relationship’, ‘target’, ‘manner of speaking’, ‘internal state’, and ‘nature of the relationship’.

Keywords:  the concept of “speaking”, verbs of speech activity, conceptual derivation,
