SERIAL EVENTS IN RUSSIAN LINGUOCULTURAL MINDSET

Abstract:  The article considers serial events – a phenomenon opening up a promising line in contemporary cognitive studies. The author used the corpus of Russian proverbs and sayings in the research as a source to draw on for the analysis of such events.
The author shows that the main serial event in the Russian linguacultural tradition is “trouble”. This view of the seriality of troubles is also characteristic of many other linguistic and cultural traditions, which brings about the idea of a universal nature of such events.
The analysis reveals conceptual features of “serial ills”, such as their frequency, inevitability (similar to fate), and presence in the most vulnerable situations of human life; however, trouble can also be “averted”. The article reveals the basic structural features of “serial ills”. It also describes four models of seriality of troubles: first, their simple sequences; second, series organized on the basis of causal relationships; third, series consisting of variously scaled negative events; and fourth, series described by numerical constants.
The results allow us to conclude that serial events constitute a real-life phenomenon, and their further investigation in the cognitive aspect may reveal the nature of the unity of physical and mental realities. Such an interaction of the physical and mental in serial events is yet to be comprehended and provided with theoretical justification. The author suggests that the phenomenon in question be probably related to quantum reality. It is not unlikely therefore that serial events are the language in which this reality is talking to man.
