SOCIAL CHARACTER OF LANGUAGE AS A SET OF COLLECTIVE TYPICAL SIGN SITUATIONS

Abstract:  The subject matter of this article is the role of language units in the communication process, the sign character of the communication process, the cognitive nature of language and speech and processes of speech production and language functioning. The purpose of the work is to study the process of communication in terms of the sign nature of language and to develop a model of the communicative process. Basic methods: empirical analysis, cognitive introspective analysis of words functioning, contextual analysis. Result: The authors argue, that each of the language speakers acts only within his/her cognitive domain. The meanings of words do not live their own lives in the texts by virtue of some of their special properties or outside of human consciousness. The language function is to guide a person in his/her cognitive domain. In the communication process there is no transfer of information or ideas through language. The individual himself creates information, reducing uncertainty by interactions in his own communicative area. The content of what is said is “ideal” and it does not go beyond consciousness; conceived word meaning does not “go” into the objective world in the form of ready-made knowledge, “attached” to the material form. Application area: cognitive linguistics, semantics, semiotics, philosophy of language, theory of communication. Conclusion: In the communicative processes a form of the sign is the same for the speaker and listener, but the content generated by the listener may not coincide with the content of the sign language of the speaker. Signs are not containers used for transmitting ideas from one mind to another. In the communication process there is no transfer of information or ideas by means of language.
